IPT Scotland?

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a brief, individual, manualised psychotherapy initially developed to treat depression. IPT is well researched with proven effectiveness for the treatment of depression and eating disorders. It is recommended in both NICE and SIGN Guidelines and in the Matrix of evidence based treatments produced by NHS Education from Scotland (NES). IPT has been used effectively with a range of age groups including adolescents and older adults.

Advance training for IPT practitioners, and supervisor training for those wishing to complete a higher level of accreditation, will be available at the Anne Freud centre in late 2012.

The training will be delivered in two sections.

Part 1 will provide advanced training to qualified IPT practitioners and may be attended as a stand alone training event.

Those applicants who wish to pursue supervisor accreditation should attend parts 1 and 2. Supervision can be co-ordinated for those applicants who have not completed all of the required casework for supervisor accreditation. Please see the home page of IPTUK for accreditation standards. Supervision fees will be charged in addition to training fees.

Experienced supervisors, with experience of conducting IPT peer supervision, may be eligible to attend part 2 alone. Individual applications will be reviewed and discussed.

This Level A, 5 day competency framework based IPT course is provided by an experienced multidiscplinary team including psychiatrists, psychotherapists, clinical nurse specialists and OT's. It uses role play, video, large group, small group, and didactic teaching to cover the knowledge base and introductory clinical skills necessary to practice IPT. The course is aimed at practising clinicians. There is the option, by negotiation with the Leicester team, to undertake UK Level B IPT clinical practitioner training following attendance at any IPT UK approved level A course.

IPT is a focused, manualised, time-limited therapy developed for the treatment of depression. It emphasises the current interpersonal relations of the depressed patient, while recognising the role of genetic, biochemical, developmental and personality factors in the causation of the illness. Since its inception as a research intervention over 30 years ago, IPT has emerged as a well researched psychotherapeutic intervention for the treatment of major depression. Over recent years, IPT has been adapted to treat other patient groups, including eating disordered patients, depressed adolescents, older adults and perinatal women. IPT is recommended in the NICE guidelines for the treatment of depression and eating disorders.
